The Criminal Courts of Justice, Parkgate Street, Dublin is the largest courts project undertaken in the Irish State since the completion of the Four Courts in 1802. The scale, complexity and finely designed details of the new building presented many opportunities for creative and unusual photographs. The faceted exterior bronze and glass skin reflects light, colours and the surrounding environment in new ways throughout the day. The Great Hall at the heart of the complex, with its galleries and bridges is monumental in size and creates a feeling of openness while making the building easy for the public to find their way around. Circulation is cleverly designed to create separate horizontal and vertical circulation routes for the judiciary, juries, defendants and members of the public. The layering of the design and interplay in expressing the openness of the justice system while allowing confidentiality for individuals within the system led to some intricate and unusual photographic images.
