St James' Gate has been the home of Guinness since 1759. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the brewery owned most of the buildings in the surrounding area, including many streets of housing for brewery employees, and offices associated with the brewery. Each year at midnight the workers of the brewery change the overhead entrance sign for a new year, this year marking 253 years of Guinness being the largest brewer of stout in the world. No more than a handful of people are ever there to mark the occasion which is a slightly different way of bringing in a new year.
